My routine before any firmware update: battery fully charged (or on a known-good supply), read and save the codeplug first, use the CPS or upgrade tool version the release notes call for, close other programs that grab COM ports, and don't let the laptop sleep. Do one radio first and test it on the air before you do the fleet. If an update fails, don't keep power-cycling it; stop and ask here with the exact error.
